How to get red wine out of upholstery

Blot fresh red wine at once with clean cloths, use salt while it is fresh, then dilute with cool water; prompt action gives the best chance on upholstery.

  1. Check the upholstery care tag code first, and pretest cool water, white vinegar, and laundry or enzyme detergent on a hidden spot.
  2. Blot the spill promptly with clean cloths; do not rub.
  3. Sprinkle salt on the fresh stain, let it sit briefly, then lift it away with a dull knife or spoon.
  4. Blot with cool water to dilute the stain, using as little moisture as possible and keeping the stain from spreading.
  5. Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 2/3 cup cool water, then blot the stain with the mixture.
  6. Blot with a laundry or enzyme detergent and cool water mixture, then blot with cool water.
  7. Blot with clean cloths until you remove as much moisture as possible, then let the upholstery dry thoroughly.
Don't do this
Repeat the white vinegar and cool water blotting, followed by the laundry or enzyme detergent and cool water blotting. If it still remains, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label.
