How to get red wine out of clothes

Blot fresh red wine immediately, cover it with salt, and use cool water promptly; treating right away gives the best chance, but alcohol can affect fabric dye.

  1. Pretest each cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness.
  2. Blot the stain with a clean cloth; do not rub.
  3. Sprinkle salt over the fresh stain to absorb some of the red wine.
  4. Sponge the stain with cool water, then blot thoroughly with a clean cloth.
  5. Soak the stained area for 15 minutes in cool water mixed with a small amount of laundry or enzyme detergent and white vinegar.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
  7. If the stain remains, sponge it with rubbing alcohol, rinse thoroughly, and launder with laundry or enzyme detergent.
Don't do this
If the stain remains after these steps, repeat only after the fabric has been checked for colorfastness. Some red wine stains may not come out completely, especially if they were not treated immediately.
