How to get coffee out of upholstery

Check the upholstery care tag code and pretest the vinegar solution first; blot with minimal moisture, and know that coffee tannin stains can be difficult to remove.

  1. Check the upholstery care tag code first, and do not use these water-and-vinegar steps if the code says not to use water.
  2. Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar with 2/3 cup cool water.
  3. Pretest the vinegar solution on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness.
  4. Blot the coffee stain with a clean cloth dampened with the vinegar solution; do not rub.
  5. Work only small amounts of the solution into the upholstery pile with your fingers, then blot.
  6. Dampen a clean cloth with cool water, rinse the area lightly, and blot again.
  7. Keep blotting with dry clean cloths, replacing them if they become wet.
Don't do this
Coffee is a tannin stain, and tannin stains are difficult to treat. If it remains, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label.
