How to get grease and oil out of upholstery
Blot up grease or oil, absorb it with baking soda, then use very little dish soap and cool water; some oily stains can be permanent.
- Check the upholstery care tag code before cleaning, and use minimal moisture.
- Blot the stain with clean cloths to remove as much grease or oil as possible; do not rub.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it absorb the oil.
- Lift away the baking soda with a dull knife or spoon.
- Pretest dish soap and cool water on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness.
- Mix a small amount of dish soap with cool water, dampen a clean cloth, and blot the stained area.
- Blot with a clean cloth dampened with cool water, then blot dry with clean cloths.
Don't do this
- Do not rub, because it can push the grease or oil deeper into the upholstery.
- Do not skip the care tag code, because some upholstery should not be cleaned with water.
- Do not soak the upholstery, because excess moisture can spread the stain or damage the fabric.
- Do not apply dish soap without pretesting, because the fabric color may not be stable.
Grease and oil can leave a permanent stain. If it remains, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label, or seek professional help.
