How to get lipstick out of carpet
Blot the lipstick out with cold water and dish soap right away, treating the oily part before the dye, and expect that a heavily pigmented stain may need repeated treatment.
- Scrape off any excess lipstick with a dull knife or spoon; do not rub it in.
- Blot the stain with a clean cloth and cold water to lift the oil; never rub, since rubbing spreads the stain and damages the carpet fibers.
- Test your cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to confirm it causes no discoloration.
- Apply a little dish soap to the stain and blot gently with a clean cloth, working from the outer perimeter inward.
- Rinse by blotting with cold water, then blot dry with a clean cloth.
- If a faint discoloration remains, sponge the area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully before checking again.
Don't do this
- Do not rub or scrub, because it spreads the stain and distorts the carpet fibers.
- Do not use hot water, because cold water keeps the stain components soluble and prevents them bonding permanently.
- Do not leave the carpet damp after treating, because moisture can draw residual pigment back to the surface and bring the stain back.
- Do not skip the hidden-spot test, because an untested solvent can discolor or damage the carpet.
"A heavily pigmented liquid lipstick can look better after the first pass yet still leave a residual discoloration that needs repeated treatment. If the dye will not lift with these steps, it may be set, and a commercial product made for this, used per its label, is the honest next option."
