How to get berry and juice stains out of carpet
First blot the berry or juice stain with a cool water and detergent solution; repeated blotting may lift it, but some stains can remain.
- Check the carpet care label, and do not use anything it prohibits.
- Pretest the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness.
- Mix dish soap or laundry or enzyme detergent with cool water.
- Apply the solution to a clean cloth, then blot the stain.
- Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar, then blot the stain.
- Repeat with the detergent and water solution, then blot with a clean cloth dampened with cool water and blot well to remove excess moisture.
- Before the carpet dries, set the pile by running your hand over the carpet against the nap, then allow it to dry thoroughly.
Don't do this
- Do not rub; rubbing spreads the stain and frays the pile.
- Do not skip the care label; it may prohibit a product or procedure.
- Do not skip pretesting; it helps check colorfastness before you treat the stain.
- Do not overwet the carpet; blot well to remove excess moisture.
If the stain remains after these steps, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label.
