How to get blood out of carpet
Blot the blood with a clean cloth dampened with cold water first; blood is a protein stain, so heat can set it and the mark may not fully come out if it has set.
- Pretest on an inconspicuous area first to check colorfastness.
- Blot the blood with a clean cloth dampened with cold water.
- Work with the nap of the carpet, and do not rub.
- Keep the cloth only lightly damp so you do not over-wet the pelt or backing.
- Rinse by dipping a clean cloth in cool water, wringing it almost dry, and stroking with the nap.
- Repeat blotting and rinsing until no more blood transfers to the cloth.
Don't do this
- Do not rub, because rubbing can spread the stain and fray the pile.
- Do not use heat, because it can cook a protein stain in and set it.
- Do not over-wet the carpet, because moisture can reach the pelt or backing.
- Do not skip the colorfastness pretest before using any cleaning agent.
If the stain remains after repeated cold-water blotting and rinsing, it may be set. Use a commercial product made for this, used per its label.
