How to get crayon out of carpet
Harden the crayon with ice and gently scrape off excess first; color may remain, so work carefully and expect that a commercial product may be needed.
- Place ice on the crayon until it hardens.
- Gently scrape excess crayon from the carpet surface with a dull knife or spoon.
- Blot the area with clean cloths until no more crayon transfers.
- If color remains, dilute 1 part rubbing alcohol with 2 parts cool water.
- Test the diluted rubbing alcohol in an inconspicuous place and continue only if the carpet is colorfast.
- Apply the diluted rubbing alcohol in small amounts, blotting well with clean cloths after each application.
- Allow the carpet to dry.
Don't do this
- Do not rub, because rubbing spreads the stain and can fray the carpet pile.
- Do not overwet the carpet, because too much liquid can damage the carpet backing.
- Do not use rubbing alcohol without testing first, because it can damage some fibers.
- Do not start with liquid before hardening and scraping the crayon.
If color remains after these steps, the stronger option is a commercial product made for this, used per its label. Some crayon color may not come out completely.
