How to get grease and oil out of carpet
Blot up excess grease or oil, cover it with baking soda first, then blot with dish soap; oily stains on carpet can remain permanent.
- Blot up as much grease or oil as possible with clean cloths.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and let it absorb the grease or oil.
- Lift away the baking soda with a dull knife or spoon for scraping.
- Mix a small amount of dish soap with cold/cool water.
- Apply the dish soap mixture to a clean cloth, then blot the stained area without rubbing.
- Blot with a clean cloth dampened with cold/cool water.
- Blot dry with clean cloths and let the carpet dry.
Don't do this
- Do not rub; rubbing spreads the stain and frays pile.
- Do not pour dish soap directly onto the carpet; apply it to a clean cloth first.
- Do not keep adding water; excess moisture can spread the stain.
If the oily stain remains, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label. Grease and oil stains can be permanent, and a badly damaged area may need professional repair or patching.
