How to get urine out of carpet
Blot the fresh urine immediately, then clean with enzyme detergent; prompt treatment improves the outlook, but urine in carpet padding may require carpet and padding replacement.
- Blot up as much urine as possible with clean cloths as soon as you notice it.
- Mix a few drops of dish soap with cool water, saturate the area, and let it sit for one or two hours without scrubbing.
- Rinse the area by gently blotting with cool water.
- Apply enzyme detergent after cleaning and follow the product label.
- Blot instead of rubbing throughout the process.
Don't do this
- Do not rub the carpet, because rubbing spreads the stain and frays the pile.
- Do not use a steam cleaner, because heat can permanently set the odor and stain in carpet fibers.
- Do not rely on products that only mask the odor, because masking without enzymes fails.
If the stain or odor remains, use a commercial product made for this, used per its label. If urine soaked into the padding, you may need to remove and replace that portion of the carpet and padding; steam heat can permanently set the odor and stain.
