How to get candle wax out of clothes
Let the wax harden and flake off, then press the rest out with a warm iron and paper towels; most wax lifts cleanly, though colored wax may leave a dye stain to treat separately.
- Read the care label and pretest any cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area first.
- Let the wax harden (the freezer is fine) and scrape off the surface wax with a dull knife.
- Sandwich the stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm iron from the back, rotating the towels until the wax no longer transfers.
- Place the stain face-down on a clean cloth and sponge with laundry or enzyme detergent, blotting with paper towels.
- Launder as appropriate for the fabric.
- If a colored dye stain remains, blot the area with rubbing alcohol, gently, to avoid spreading it.
Don't do this
- Do not rub the stain; blot only, so you do not spread the wax or dye.
- Do not use any product or procedure the care label prohibits.
- Do not apply heat to a fabric the care label says not to heat.
Colored wax can leave a dye stain that is hard to fully remove; if it persists, a commercial product made for this, used per its label, is the honest next step.
